• About

Junbungaku means “pure literature” in Japanese. Junbungaku is the good stuff. The real deal. The kind of stuff you can sink your teeth into. Thought-provoking. Moving. Visceral.

This is a place for news on what is going on in the contemporary Japanese literary world. Because to my knowledge, there isn’t a site like this out there for English speakers. A consolidated source for news, reviews, commentary, analysis, and more.

Junbungaku is run by me, Will Eells. I’m a contributing reviewer at Three Percent, a freelance writer, and an aspiring Japanese translator with a particular interest in contemporary  fiction.  I also write at my other blog, Wednesday Afternoon Picnic.
