I have to say, this week’s bestseller list looks surprisingly different than what I’ve been seeing these last few months.

Could it be that people are getting over Higashigawa’s lady detective and sassy butler stories? Is it possible that the holidays have made depressed people really want to turn their lives around—how else can we describe the sudden huge rise to 2nd for “The Magic of Cleaning Up for a Thriving Life” after weeks of slowly tumbling down the list?

Could Christmas shopping have bumped the latest volume of the “Incredible Zorori,” or the re-emergence of Shogakukan’s “Kidsopedia”?

But I think the fanboys still rule the list this week. We have the latest volume of the popular Bakemonogatari light novel series debuting at number one (the previous volume doing the same thing when we started doing Bestseller Lists here at Junbungaku) as well as another video game guide, this time for the unbelievably popular Monster Hunter series. And perhaps the latest volume of the long-running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series also benefited from having Nisio Isin, the author of the aforementioned Bakemonogatari series, pen this latest volume.

Finally, in tenth place, we have a prequel novel of sorts to the popular TV drama “Mita the Housekeeper” (some dorama fan sites call it “I’m Mita, Your Housekeeper”), about a housekeeper who will do anything (DUM DUM DUMMM) for the collapsing family who hired her.
